natural herbs for anxiety/motivation?

I get anxious terribly about school but most thing people recomend are downers and relaxers. i need something to motivate me, and i cannot keep taking aderal. i’ve only done it handful of times but i don’t like pills or amphetamines for that matter.

What your friends say is partially. If you are "terribly anxious," you need something to calm you down. Motivation is a different story, but let’s look at them individually.

Natural supplements that can relax the central nervous system include valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best. You have to keep in mind that it can take a few weeks for some herbs (including valerian) to build up in your system before they work. You can also try 5-HTP, trytophan, or GABA. Adderall is an amphetamine that is likely to make you feel MORE anxious, not less.

You can also try yoga and other gentle forms of exercise to alleviate your anxiety. Meditation, or some other form of relaxation, is also valuable. Alternative health has much to offer to quell the stress you are feeling.

I think it’s important to examine the anxiety itself. What about school makes you anxious? Some student love school, others hate it, while most are in the middle. You might benefit from talking to a counselor to understand why school causes you so much anxiety.

If you are interested in the school subjects, that alone will make you motivated. If you are interested in meeting fellow students, that also would be a motivation. A drug may give you a short lift, but is unlikely to motivate you on a long term basis.

If school subjects are boring or you are just going because you have to, that will give you little motivation. If you are going to school just to meet or impress your friends, that also is not much of a motivation for studying. These are issue you might work out with a school counselor. Drugs or herbs, etc., are not the real answer.

Whats the Best Chinese Herbs for Depression & Anxiety?

Does anybody have any links for good websites relating to chinese herbs

For anxiety, cutting caffeine and sugar will help, but you can also try a few supplements for added help. Some of the most popular natural products for stress are GABA, L-Theanine, Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, and L-Tryptophan.

Some of the most popular natural products for helping with mood are St. John’s Wort, SAMe, 5-HTP (or Tryptophan), Rhodiola Rosea, and some stress-relievers like GABA or L-Theanine can help, too.
I’m a bit surprised you specifically want Chinese herbs after all the media exposure over the past several months (since so many people are scared away from anything Chinese), but there are quite a number of them that can help for stress. They include Perilla leaves (Perilla frutescens), Cyperus rhizome (Cyperus rotundus), Chih-shih fruit (Citrus aurantium), Typhonium rhizome (Typhonium flagelliforme), Aurantium peel (Citrus aurantium), Bamboo sap (Phyllostachys nigra), Bupleurum root (Bupleurum chinense), Cnidium rhizome (Ligusticum wallichi), Gambir stem (Uncaria gambir), Hoelen sclerotium (Poria cocos), Ophiopogon root tuber (Ophiopogon japonicus), Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale), Ginseng root (Panax ginseng), Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorum), Tang-kuei root (Angelica sinensis), Coptis rhizome (Coptis chinensis), and Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis).

Aside from supplements, you can also try going out and doing things you enjoy, spending time with friends, or even having a good cry. If that’s not enough to help, maybe talking it out with a trusted friend or an objective third-party person (like a counselor).
Just remember, even though you might feel bad, it’s never as bad as it may feel. Everyone goes through tough times and we can all get through it… sometimes we just need a little extra help ;-) Good luck!

Can I take all of these herbs together for my anxiety disorder?

Skullcap, st.johns wort, valerian root, korean ginseng, and kava kava? Should i take a certain kind during night or day? How much should i take of each? If not what is the best thing for me to do to get the best results?

No do not do that. There are alternatives to medicine, check my source. I was a long time sufferer myself.

Are there all natural herbs and medicines for anxiety?

I suffer from anxiety and slight depression, I do not want to have to take a prescription every day but would like to find something to help with the symptoms. I have tired St. John’s Wart and had some side affects. I was wondering if there was anything else out there I could try.

Oh yes. I am starting on this on Monday. I just haven’t been feeling myself lately. Anyways I am going to my local herbal store and buying some Mugwort. It is a mind, body and spirit cleanser used by the Native Americans. Now, the way that I am going to consume it is called a fusion. Here is a video on how to make a fusion. Just use Mugwort instead of Nettle:

What are some OTC drugs and herbs for anxiety that work and calm you down right away?

valerian root and kave kava or better yet celestial seasonings makes a tea with valerian in it that works very very well.

BE very careful with herbs though – most have side effects like kave kave is very bad for your liver i think and valerian is bad for something else – all herbs have side effects and some can interact with other meds so be careful and don’t combine them – they can kill you too ya know. As far as these people telling you to take a lot of this stuff to get it to work – that is addict mentality – always follow the dosage directions – everyone’s body is different and you may have a low tolerance so be careful

fyi: valerian is NOT a benzo – it works similarly to them as far as its effects on the neurotransmitter GABA so please ignore half of these comments

Safe herbs for stress/anxiety while breastfeeding?

Looking for some suggestions for safe herbal remedies/therapies – I do breastfeed. Thanks very much!
Thank you for all the responses. I’ve been reluctant to take St John’s and still am as research goes both ways and I want to keep my baby safe. I’ll take a look for Motherwort though.

Thank you all very much.

As Amy said, chamomile tea is the bomb for relaxing. You do want to get the pure chamomile and not a mixture like Sleepy time or some other stuff. Also, it should be the flowers only, not the whole plant chopped up. I get a good kind at GNC. Took me a while to find a good one and thiers is great. My mother, grandmother and Great aunt used to grow it and once they all passed away, I had to find a new source. Good luck with that and your baby.

Does anyone know of any herbs to treat anxiety?

I was told that Kava Kava is good for treating anxiety but upon further research i found it to be very dangerous. does anyone know of any others that could help?

My doctor suggested Valerian Root when I was dealing with post-partum depression. It does take the edge off of stress without that drugged feel.
I also use it as a gentle relaxant when I have insomnia. It’s rather pricey and sometimes hard to find, but it has been worth it for me. It is more effective than St. John’s Wort.
Other than the fact that it stinks like mold, I know of no side effects.
