why do some depression sufferers experience insomnia while others experience hypersomnia?

What are some of the psychological reasons why one person suffering depression might sleep constantly and another experience acute insomnia?

I cant say for sure, but the first thought that came to mind is that everyones body chemistry is different and that may be why.

Personally, I went thru years of insomnia until I found Ambien. Thank the good Lord for Ambien.

One is at a gloomy and always-tired sort of state while the others mind is never dormant.

Depression and highblood pressure cause you to sleep more.

Depression alone will cause you to stay awake.

Some depressed people suffer from serotonin re-uptake or don’t produce enough serotonin. Serotonin is very important for healthy sleep. This lack causes some to have insomnia. Other chemical imbalances may be the cause of hypersomnia. A circadian rhythm problem can also be the cause of sleep problems. In the manic feature of bipolar disorder sleeplessness is a feature. When severe hypersomnia is found, drug overdose/ abuse is suspected. there are however other conditions such as; Klein-Leven syndrome that can cause hypersomnia. A sleep study followed by a good physical exam can usually identify what is causing the problem.

for some reasons i do not know, depression seems to be an illness of extremes. you either dont sleep or over sleep, dont eat or over eat, have no sex or play rabbit. there are two kinds of chemical imbalances that cause depression.too much of the chemicals or not enough. perhaps these two extremes bring about the others. meaning, dont sleep-not enough chemicals. over sleep-too much.
    just an opinion.

Depression doesn’t appear to be one illness. There may be several subtypes. Unipolar endogenous major depressions and melancholic depressions are more likely to include insomnia. Hypersomnia seems to be more common than insomnia in bipolar depressions. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) that regularly occurs in the winter months almost always causes significant hypersomnia whereas "summer SAD" (which is far less common than the winter variety) usually causes insomnia. Reactive depression (due to grief or stress) usually involves difficulty falling or staying asleep.
