How Can I Seek Treatment For Depression?

I am a young college student and I know that I am aflficted with depression. It’s not severe, but I feel that it dooes hinder my academic performance ability, especially the past couple of semesters, including this one. How can I seek treatment without it having to become "a big deal"? Can anyone else relate to this situation? If so, any advice or thoughts? Thank you .

Depression is something that is very common in doctor’s offices now, so it is nothing to be embarrassed about.

I would recommend going to see a doctor who is willing to spend time with you.

Avoid the one’s that when you say "I’m depressed", and s/he says… "Here take this."

There are many different things that can cause it.

If you just feel like talking about it to people going through similar stuff, go to meetup.com and look for local chapters that are usually free to go to. Or go to Yahoo Groups and post and read post, sometimes you can even get people’s emails/IMs to talk one on one.

Definitely do something though.

if you believe you have postpartum depression my advice to you is go to a doctor and explain your situation. mothers have made awful and painful desisons because they didnt get the treatment they needed. i dont believe there is a natural way to cure a depression, medications and counseling though, do help. please get the help you need now, before you do something you might regret later.

Hi I have been having bad anxiety and panic attacks for over fifteen sixteen years now. I am in my mid twenty’s now. I had a bad childhood I think this is why I have these problems. I have lost jobs and was going to school but the anxiety got so bad it was hard for me to even leave my apartment. I do not go out with my friends anymore because in a social senting around even a few people my anxiety gets really bad it feels like I am going to fall over. If you’re looking for a non-medication approach the only thing there is is counseling. Not using medication, honestly, doesn’t give you very good odds of getting better. A combination of medication and counseling is the best way to treat these things. Especially panic attacks which will be vastly improved by adivan or a similar drug to take when you feel one coming on.

How do you know if it’s Depression or just a hormonal problem if your not in menopause yet? Im in my mid 40’s

I am going through alot of emotional things right now and I’m not sure if it’s the hormones or if I could be suffering from depression. I think they go hand in hand! You are in Perimenopause, and that causes huge fluxes in hormones. I used an over the counter herbal estrogen that helped reduce the hormone swings, that helped with sleep disturbances too. I also used wild yam cream to help with hot flashes and got some relief.
I also went on an anti depressant, short term, and it helped with the depression which was related in part to the hormones. I recommend you talk to your doctor, and get some blood tests to check your hormone levels.

rose hops, st. johns warts, Ginger, valerian, root catnip, peppermint, alfalfa, dandelion root,and mullein leaf. that is all i can think of i am no expert but they work for me as well as a supplement htp5 great for sleep. i don"t take lexapro any more and i have not gone to jail. Wellbutrien and lexapro made me suicidal and manic. it was like i was another person, note any of these things takes about 2 weeks to make absorption. but any thing you can take as a liquid will absorb faster.

docter tells you to smoke cigarettes others think your wrong.

I dont smoke now, but when I started smoking a while ago, my desire to draw was strong, I’m an artist and I dont do much of it now,

I had a cigarette the other day after not smoking for about 2 years. I had the impulse to draw right after the smoke.

but that was a couple of weeks ago, and I’m not going to start smoking. if I want to get back into my artwork, then I will find inspiration thru other mediums

I have suffered with mild depression most of my life. My family has a history of addiction and depression, so I believe mine is probably clinical as well as behavioral. I’ve been taking Prozac for almost 10 years. My husband and I want to learn as much as we can about this so we can minimize its negative effects.
If you are a person who is licensed in this field, can you recommend a few good books on this topic? Is Prozac the best treatment? How does low cholesterol and low seratonin interact with this? Yes, I’m already in therapy.

postpartum depression?

Hello, many people are affected by postpartum depression, and i am one of them. For me it didnt come on until my baby was 9 months (she had been very ill for that time and it suddenly hit me). For some people it can come on in the first few weeks. Its important to not get PPD confused with the ‘baby blues’. Most women feel very emotional for a period after the birth. For me it was about a week. You should make an appointment with your doctor, who will discuss your feelings and decide with you what the best course of action would be. Im guessing that your doc will want to wait a few weeks before starting any treatment to see if your symptoms improve.

Please dont beat yourself up about this, its a chemical imbalance that is taking place in your brain, and you have no control over it whatsoever. It took me a while to get it sorted, but i am currently taking a low dose of anti depressants and undergoing therapy… i feel like a new person, the old me!
