Should a woman that had postpartum depression try to have another child?

My friend wants to have another child, the first time she had one she got postpartum depression and ended up giving him up for adoption to his grand parents because she was incapable to care for him.Do you think its a good idea for her to try again? Or should she just try to deal with it?

Postpartum depression is treatable. With her first, did she consult a doctor for help? If she did and she still couldn’t handle it, then she should think long and hard about why she wants a child. If she didn’t, why not? There are many helpful ways to manage symptoms (drugs, therapy, etc.).

Did she get professional treatment for her depression the first time? If she is thinking about having another kid she should talk to her doctor and a therapist/psychiatrist who has experience in post partum depression and see about getting on some medication to try to prevent/deal with the depression.
I expect if she tells them what was going on, how she felt etc they could give her some professional advice about whether or not to try for another kid. Some women can have another child if they can get the correct treatment for the depression [if it happens again], but for some women it is so severe that it may not be worth the risk.

She should talk to her doctor. There’s nothing you can do to prevent PPD, and if you get it once, chances are, she’ll have it again, but it’s not a reason to give up having a baby.

There are medicines and treatments to help her. There are programs and volunteers that can help with her baby.
