Depression is something that is very common in doctor's offices now, so it is nothing to be embarrassed about.

I would recommend going to see a doctor who is willing to spend time with you.

Avoid the one's that when you say "I'm depressed", and s/he says... "Here take this."

There are many different things that can cause it.

If you just feel like talking about it to people going through similar stuff, go to meetup.com and look for local chapters that are usually free to go to. Or go to Yahoo Groups and post and read post, sometimes you can even get people's emails/IMs to talk one on one.

Definitely do something though.

Below are some likes that will help you see how you can handle depression.
References :
http://thyroidsolutions.blogspot.com/2007/11/are-you-depressed-becasue-of-depressed.html

Coming from someone who has suffered from Depression for the past 15 years, I'm going to tell you what has and hasnt worked for me.
First of all, congrats on realizing that you need help. That my dear is the most important thing. Secondly, going to your dr is a great idea but you had said that you dont want this turned into a "big deal" It already is a big deal hun. If you dont get treatment for it, it will just bring on more, shall we say, issues.
If you want to go on the RX meds, that is totally awesome but just know that starting them is a long drawn out process of finding the one that works for YOU. I have been on many anti-d meds and alot of them did nothing for me. So what I am going to do is give you a list of vitamins and minerals that you can get at any grocery store or pharmacy that work better and faster then any rx med out there(in my opinion of course) I have been on them for a week now and my life is getting back to normal. I dont feel down all the time. for the first time in a long time I can safely say that I feel awesome.
Here's the list.....
5 HTP 100 mg, Omega 3 fish oil 1200 mg, Sam-E 200 mg, Gingko Biloba 120mg.
All of these together has worked absofuckinlutely awesome for me. What have you got to lose by trying them? All of these pills are natural and are made by your body anyways, these pills just give you an extra boost. Hope you feel better soon.
References :
http://www.depressionremedy.com/herbal-remedies/depressionremedy/herbal-and-natural-remedies

If you are in college then I am assuming you probably can't afford to see a private psychologist. Talk to your health clinic on campus and see if they offer any counseling...it is usually free as long as you are a student. You may also want to see if there are any support groups meeting on your campus that deal with issues such as depression or stress. The best place to start would probably be the psychology department. You may need medication to help balance out your chemicals, but you don't have to be on them forever. When I was first put on anti-depressants, I felt worse because I was afraid I would not be able to pursue my career being "crazy." Then I began talking to other people and realized I was not the only one experiencing depression and anxiety and it did not mean the end of my career.
References :
Well there's a few things that you can do...and some of the options depend on whether or not you have medical insurance....
If you have medical insurance, then I say go and see a psychiatrist...express your concerns to him or her and see what goes after that...
Or you could opt to see a counselor. Or a therapist of some type..but keep in mind, only the psychiatrist can prescribe medication.
If you don't have insurance to fall back on...then you will have to opt for the cheap way of helping yourself..
Start with checking out some books at the library on depression. There are a lot of them to chose from, that's for sure...the better you educate yourself about your depression, the better equipped you are to handle and deal with it.
You could opt to talk with a priest, or a preacher... or you could even call a help line and talk with someone over the phone about your depression.
Books are very helpful, though...they will give you some coping tools to help you through the depression.
References :
don't want to burden you with my life story, lets focus on your problem. Find a dr that you can feel comfortable with and tell him exactly what your going through and ask him to help you with treatment. He will have you take a short test which will help him diagnose the extent and level of your depression and which medication to prescribe i promise after a short time of being on your meds you'll feel so much better and as a diagnostic tool go to www.Lexapro.com and there is a short test which can help you to know what to tell the dr print the results and take it with you
References :
Go see a doctor because we always think we can resolve this on our own. You can't. Maybe you can get one some anti-depressants for now. You don't have to be on them for years and years. We all go through this, but how you deal with it is the important thing. I have severe anxiety disorder and sometimes I can't leave my house, but I force myself. You will feel better after talking to someone about it and getting help. Good luck!
