In what cases would you need to go to the hospital for depression treatment?

Like, would you need to go if you just have it a bit worse than others, or does there need to be certain criteria for you to go, such as self-harm etc?

The best bet is seeing a psychiatrist for a proper diagnostic and treatment. If for some reason that’s not an option or if you cannot afford therapy, read http://tiny.cc/wmis4/
In many cases depression will respond quickly to the use of this treatments (within a few weeks), but if this still doesn’t work, see a psychiatrist; psychiatric treatment for depression involves antidepressants and usually but not always, therapy. In either case, psychiatric treatment for depression is a long-time, continuous one, it isn’t like an aspirin when your head hurts.
If you are clinically depressed, you can’t be successful by your self.

Hope this helps.

It may depend on person to person, but from experience, usually self harm, suicidal thoughts or actions, or homicidal thoughts can contribute to being admitted for depression treatment.

usually when you or others around you are in immediate danger from your depression. Self harm on its own is generally not enough – there usually needs to be suicidal ideation at the very least as well (having said that I self harm a lot & suffer from suicidal ideations but more often than not I receive my treatment as an outpatient – there have been relatively few times compared o when I’ve actually felt that way that hospitalisation has been an option.

To actually go to A&E you need to be actively in danger at that moment. This includes self harm, suicide attempts, and panic attacks that have set off asthma or causes psychosis.

However, you can go to your GP at any point. Even if you only have mid depression there are things they can do to help. If you have a poor diet (especially Vegan or otherwise dairy free) it may be as simple as you needing B12 supplements. There is also the possibility of councilling, anti-depressants, and a whole host of other treatments.

Is you have just had a baby and the depression is post-natal then you should go to your doctor straight away for that. If it is causing neglect to the baby, yourself or other children then you may be checked into a short term care clinic where they will help you look after the baby 24/7 whilst treating you. Even if you are not neglecting anyone, you should still head to the doctor straight away as it will have a huge effect on both your and the child’s life if left untreated.

If you cannot wait to see the GP because you think you are going to self harm or attempt suicide before office hours, you can check yourself into a mental health facility overnight. Your nearest one may be attached to the hospital, or it may be a seperate facility to better cater to long term care. Don’t worry, if you are not actively suicidal by the morning they won’t make you stay. You can leave and head to your GP, or they may have given you the help you need already.
